National Conservation Leadership with Local Wildlife Habitat Results

Pheasants Forever empowers local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent – the only national conservation organization that operates through this truly grassroots structure. As a result, chapter volunteers are able to see the fruits of their efforts locally, while belonging to a larger national organization with a voice on federal and state conservation policy.

Pheasants Forever members are a diversified group of hunters, non-hunters, farmers, ranchers, landowners, conservation enthusiasts and wildlife officials. Pheasants Forever is for those who want to make a difference for wildlife by creating habitat, restoring wetlands and protecting prairies.

Some of the things we do:

Wildlife Habitat Projects – The system of empowering local chapters and volunteers to make the best decisions for wildlife in their local area has resulted in the average annual completion of over 20,000 projects. Since its inception in 1982, Pheasants Forever’s wildlife habitat projects have benefited more than 5.3 million acres across the continent. In that time, PF has participated in over 1,000 different land acquisitions totaling over 135,000 acres. Those land acquisition projects have been completed in conjunction with local, state and federal natural resource agencies, and all of those projects are today open to public hunting.

Habitat Conservation Advocacy – Pheasants Forever’S mission is directly tied to a strong framework of federal conservation programs. Authority for critical conservation programs, such as the Conservation and Wetlands Reserve Program, is granted by the U.S. Congress in the Federal Farm Bill’s Conservation Title. In total, federal farm conservation programs allow us to manage nearly 50 million acres for wildlife habitat. Your Sagamore PF chapter lobbies personally with state and federal elected officials to preserve funding for important initiatives that protect and build habitat! Without you, this can’t happen.

Habitat Conservation Education – Pheasants Forever has developed programs and materials that promote education and public awareness, including its Ringnecks and Whistlers youth programs and the Leopold Education Project. Locally, the Sagamore Chapter has worked with the Indiana DNR to sponsor a free pheasant hunting day for youth in our area. This has been highly successful and has brought many youth into the sport that would never have had a chance to get into the outdoors. We also sponsor and provide firearms safety training. Our mobile shooting trailer provides youth with an opportunity to develop safe and skilled firearms handling.

The Sagamore Chapter also works with and supports the national initiative called Ringnecks. The PF Ringnecks Program is dedicated to introducing youth to hunting, shooting sports and outdoor conservation through youth events, education, community service and cooperation with both governmental and non-governmental partnerships. Through a variety of programs, youth will gain knowledge, learn skills and develop a land ethic necessary to be responsible hunters and conservationists. As they grow up, they can in turn pass on the outdoor traditions of their youth to future generations. Bring your Ringnecks to our next banquet! They will have a blast.

The Sagamore PF Chapter hosts an annual banquet each fall. This banquet is one of the bigger sources of generating funds to support our habitat and youth projects. The banquet committee works hard to have a fun and lively program that everyone can enjoy. There are always opportunities to get involved in the local chapter and working on the banquet committee is a great way to start.
